Which plate for which bar

Every plate on this page has a 50mm Olympic centre and fits any of our bars. The choice is about how you train, not compatibility.

  • Bumper plates are solid rubber with a steel insert and a full 450mm diameter at every weight, so the bar always sits at the right height. Buy these if you drop the bar from overhead or from the hip.
  • Tri-grip plates are rubber-coated with three cut-out handles. Easier to carry and load, quieter on the floor, and the sensible default for a general home gym.
  • Deep dish cast iron is bare iron with a raised rim. Compact, traditional, and the cheapest way to buy mass.
  • Electroplated steel is slim and dense, so a heavy bar stays short. Closest to a calibrated competition plate.

Do not forget the small ones

Most people buy the 20s and 25s and then stall because they cannot make a small jump. Fractional 1.25kg and 2.5kg plates are what let you keep adding weight once the big increments stop working.
