How much bench do you need

A bench gets more use than almost anything else in a gym, and it is the piece people most often under-buy. A wobbly bench makes heavy pressing feel unsafe, which quietly caps how hard you train.

  • Flat benches are the most stable and the cheapest. If you only press flat, this is all you need.
  • Incline and FID benches adjust from flat through incline to decline. The ladder adjustment is quick and there is less to go wrong.
  • Commercial benches use a heavier frame, a larger pad and a mechanism built for constant adjustment. Buy these for anywhere the public trains.
  • Roman chairs cover back extensions, glute work and core, and take up little space.

Check the pad width against your shoulders. A narrow pad helps arch on a bench press but is less comfortable for general work.
