Cast iron or competition steel

The two ranges do different jobs, and the difference is size rather than quality.

  • Cast iron bells grow as they get heavier, which is fine for swings, goblet squats and general training. Colour bands on the handle let you read the weight from across the room. This is the range most home and PT gyms buy.
  • Competition steel bells are all the same physical size and handle diameter regardless of weight, so your technique does not change as you go up. Colour-coded to international standard. Worth it if you are training snatch and jerk, or running classes where form matters.

Where to start

A home setup usually wants 8, 12 and 16kg for most people, or 16, 20 and 24kg if you already train. Studios buy in pairs. Kettlebells are sold individually here, so you are not forced into a set.
